- In research with Chinese academic and industrial colleagues, the design and underpinning technical principles of the novel design of a negative pressure wave (NPW)-based pipeline leak detection system, using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG)-based pressure sensors, has been reported. It allows accurate determination of the pressure change trends along the pipeline and thus permits the calculation of the negative pressure wave (NPW) velocity. Work shows the technique especially applicable to monitoring explosive and inflammable gases, where a key comparison is made with traditional NPW detection techniques, showing capability to achieve higher leak-location accuracy and the detection of smaller leakage volumes.
