- The article is in German. It provides detailed analysis of the cycle of 8 large-scale stucco reliefs of the ‘Life of St Gallus’ in the cathedral of St Gallen (Switzerland). Johann Christian Wenzinger, the sculptor of the cycle, not only provided the overall design for the cathedral’s interior, but also, highly unusually among his German peers, took an active part in its execution across all media. The article offers a new analysis of Wenzinger’s artistic and social standing in the context of current research on the guilds, and shows how he managed to carve a successful career outside guild rules.

- German. The article provides in-depth analysis of Wenzinger’s social standing, contextualizing his biography and oeuvre through current research on guild practice, and demonstrates how he managed to carve a successful career outside their rigid structures. It also provides in-depth analysis of what is probably his most famous, certainly his most unusual piece of work, the relief cycle at the monastery of St Gallen.
