- Beyond authoring the book’s Introduction and Chapter Two: ‘The Stop-Motion Landscape’, Pallant gave conceptual shape to the book as a whole. Having identified a lacuna in the extant scholarship, concerning the study of animated landscapes as active and meaning-making components of the animated text, Pallant coordinated the work of fifteen scholars so that their combined scholarship would address this gap.
Pallant used the Introduction to challenge the scholarly preoccupation with animated characters (in terms of aesthetics, performance and star persona), as well as setting up the three perspectives (history, form, and function) that are employed across the book to interrogate the subject of animated landscapes.
Through a process of open call invitation and direct solicitation, Pallant ensured that the book featured a diverse range of contributors (10 male, 5 female, and 6 contributions by either BIPOC or overseas scholars). Furthermore, Pallant shaped the overall research programme of the book so that the three overarching perspectives provided a diverse array of interpretations and research methods (including archival, interview, textual, and practice-based approaches). Pallant revised all of the chapters through two phases of editorial review (2014-2015), in collaboration with the respective contributors, to ensure the coherence and quality of the research.
The contribution of Animated Landscapes in addressing a lacuna in the extant scholarship is confirmed by the fact that the international Society for Animation Studies awarded it the 2017 Norman McLaren/Evelyn Lambart Award-Best Scholarly Book in Animation (https://www.animationstudies.org/v3/book-award/).
