- Double-weighted statement
- The output is the product of extensive four-year engagement with substantial academic debates about liberalism and colonialism, liberal imperialism, and the methodology of the history of political thought. Each chapter on individual thinkers required a lengthy investigation of very large primary and secondary materials. The underpinning methodology developed from sustained reflection on the extensive and sophisticated methodological debates in the history of political thought. The overall arguments of the book develop in relation to existing debates within two substantial areas: the debate about liberalism and empire, and arguments about the nature of liberal patterns of thought.
