- This book examines different understandings and values ascribed to trees, woods and forests by analysing in considerable depth a series of episodes and moments in woodland history. It is the result of sustained research effort over more than ten years drawing on diverse primary sources and involving the collection and analysis of a large body of material. The analysis is based on research in the UK, Italy, Greece, France, Japan and the USA. It draws on a wide array of sources and approaches including oral histories, historical ecology, literary descriptions, historical maps, plans and drawings and geographical field surveys.
