- Double-weighted statement
- Research for the book took place between 2014 and 2017, during which time nearly all of the researcher's time was dedicated to this project. It makes extensive use of Chinese-language primary sources from the 1860s to the 1960s and includes discussion of rare materials consulted at the libraries of Academia Sinica in Taiwan. It makes a significant contribution to the study of Chinese Buddhist institutions and their financial and political connections and argues for the importance of these institutions in modern Chinese history and in China today. It also includes a digital humanities study of data from local historical sources.
