- Maria Beneyto: En Defensa de la Poesía takes a fresh new look at the poetry of María Beneyto by offering new theoretical and interdisciplinary approaches to her literary trajectory (1950-2000). The special issue also includes a sample of María Beneyto’s unpublished poems, coordinated by both editors in collaboration with one of the contributors, Rosa María Rodríguez Magda. It constitutes an original intervention not only in reference to the study of the poet, but also in terms of the analysis of poetic language in the second half of the twentieth century.
The articles were selected under a rigorous scrutiny by Candelas Gala and Monica Jato. The eight pieces included are authored by world-leading experts in the field of twentieth century Spanish poetry. Gala and Jato peer reviewed all articles, sharing these editorial tasks equally between them. Revisions and additions for drafts were recommended and this meticulous process yielded second and third rounds of editing, which then served to ensure the cohesion of the special issue. Both editors produced their own introductions to the issue. By drawing on her personal correspondence with Beneyto, one which spanned over the course of ten years, Jato offered new insights into the interaction of the poet with her literary environment, foregrounding the controversial reception of her work owing to her bilingual dimension/status (Spanish and Catalan). She also contributed to this volume with a single-authored article, which traces out an alternate poetics related to the expression of matters of memory, highlighting the implications and resonances of Beneyto’s work in the second half of Spanish twentieth century poetry.
