- This book contributes to a debate currently enjoying a revival: would languages spoken (only) a few thousand years ago be less well-equipped than modern languages when it comes to subordinate clauses? The book provides a new look at early Greek relative clause syntax and semantics. It draws on a substantial corpus of data from a wide range of genres, providing philological analysis drawing on recent work in linguistic theory and typology. To conduct this range of research, Probert developed her knowledge and skills to a new level over a decade, in fields including theoretical semantics, Homeric criticism, and epigraphy.
