- Hutchinson’s research embraces an eclectic mix of historical and contemporary influences, from Damian Hirst’s sculptural appropriation’s and Anthony Gormley’s geometric human forms to the original painted surface of Polyclitus’s work (a Greek sculptor known for his bronze sculptures of young athletes) all transformed with a fresh, new post-punk graffiti-inspired, digitally painted surface.
This post-punk, remix aesthetic underpins Hutchinson’s methodology – and can be seen in the way he utilises 3D scans of works such as ‘Sleeping Shepherd’ by John Gibson (a marble sculpture from 1818) scanned by the contemporary Austrian Sculptor Oliver Laric, remixing it by uniting original scanned mesh with what Hutchinson calls, straightforwardly, his ‘blocky’ mesh. As with Punk itself, Hutchinson’s apparently direct, dynamic approach to making artwork and getting it ‘out there’ belies a sophisticated approach to making which embraces a 21st century, fluid ‘remix’ culture whilst commenting on 20th century modernist/ formalist work.
For example in 2019, Hutchinson’s ‘Sleeping Shepherd Remixed’ was included in the VERY LARGE WORKS online show organised by http://noemata.net/ whilst an XR presentation of the ‘Sleeping Shepherd Remixed’ was selected for ‘knackknack The Sunderland Pavilion of the Wrong Biennale’ and ‘The Wrong Epicentre’, Centre del Carme, Valencia Spain. https://thewrong.org/epicentre
Similarly, ‘The Spear Bearer Remixed Dpm11m, dory2tex.jpg:’ was included in Acropolis Remix Parthenon Sculptures’ Reflections on Reflection http://acropolisremix.eu.org/ in 2019, curated by Celia Lange. This piece was a reworking of ‘Doryphoros (The Spear Bearer)’ made by Polyclitus circa 450 BCE, from a scan made from the cast (ref. KAS11) in The Royal Cast Collection at SMK – National Gallery of Denmark.
Hutchinson is a prolific artist, intervening in social and public spaces, online galleries and exhibitions as well as creating self-organised interventions in local/national/international contexts – a reflection of Punk’s DIY culture of energy and direct engagement with an audience.
