- This book combines a close reading of primary and secondary sources in Japanese with extensive research of the archival material held in a number of collections around the world (original prints, photography magazine collections and correspondences) to provide the first account of its subject matter. Mapping out art historical and critical contexts relevant to the apprehension of Surrealist photography in 1930s Japan—most of which is previously unseen outside of its country of origin—and illustrated with over fifty images, the volume is a ground-breaking new resource for the study of Surrealism and history of art and photography in Japan.
