- Double-weighted statement
- A major work of synthesis and interpretation demonstrating a sustained research effort over the last four decades. It involved the laborious collection and analysis of a very large body of primary materials, often complex and difficult to access, and their contextualisation within an extensive secondary literature. It presents an innovative and critical line of argument, being the first one-volume study to include all the Spanish conquests in America between 1492 and 1542. This required an extended and multi-layered process of creative investigation from a wide range of different, often controversial perspectives.
