- This book is the first extended study of the important terms ‘public’ and ‘private’ in early modern theatrical culture. The book demonstrates a sustained research effort which considers a large body of material from the beginnings of the commercial theatre in the 1560s to the illegal theatrical activity in civil war and Republican England. The wide scope of the book is unusual in studies of early modern drama. The book covers a very wide range of plays, authors, playing companies, and playing venues and has significant implications for the study of early modern drama.
