- The book draws on seven years of research in libraries in Singapore, PRC, Taiwan, USA and UK and examines thousands of pages of work in classical Chinese from late Qing dynasty and early Republican-period China (1860-1930). Writing up this research took five years. The book analyses the significance of that material to political theory and applies this innovative methodology across eight chapters, using numerous Chinese- and English-language secondary literature and the author’s own translations of the source material to bridge Chinese political ideas and contemporary political theory in questions about otherness, cross-cultural understanding, and the use of the past.
