- This is the first complete English translation of the non 論 (‘treatises’) and sŏl 說 (‘discourses’) chapters of the Tongmunsŏn 東文選 (1478), modeled after the sixth-century Chinese Wen Xuan 文選. The Tongmunsŏn is Korea's largest and most important literary collection with 49 different genres (exceeding its prototype’s 37 genres). The translations crystallise the moral philosophy current at the origin of the Chosŏn state (1392-1910). An extensive introduction offers the first explication in English of the Tongmunsŏn and its position in East Asian and Korean literary history, including prosodic analyses of free-style and parallel prose.
