- This monograph is the culmination of sustained research (2007-2015), drawing on 2008-2010 ethnographic research and consulting primary historical documents in Sarajevo. The analytical work for the book was developed during 2010-2015 through numerous scholarly presentations and discussions across Europe and through drafting two articles for major anthropology journals. This lengthy and deep engagement was necessary to drive an agenda-setting intervention that (a) counters dominant exceptionalist understandings of Bosnia and Herzegovina, using techniques of deprovincialisation; and (b) helped establish a new subfield of the anthropology of hope, particularly in relation to contemporary statecraft.
