- Over three decades, Landy’s research has aimed to facilitate interest and participation in sound-based music, particularly through education. Between 2011 and 2020, the work has been supported by two Creative Europe and three HEIF grants. Launched in 2014 (v12/2020 submitted), the EARS2 ElectroAcoustic Resource Site pedagogical project is Landy’s most ambitious research venture, and was created at the request of UNESCO, which supported the earlier EARS site (ears.dmu.ac.uk) for students/professionals. UNESCO sought an equivalent sonic creativity resource for children and the uninitiated for use in developing as well as developed countries. Its creative software (partially separately funded), Compose with Sounds (CwS), is integrated into EARS2.
EARS2/CwS’s interdisciplinary research aim is to:
-Find a holistic approach to learning, where learning (theory, concepts, history, technology), listening (to works, sound manipulation techniques) and making (creative work) are taught simultaneously, employing a multi-level concept-driven approach which addresses a number of countries’ national curriculum goals and covers the breadth of sound-based creativity.
EARS2/CwS’s methods include:
-Creating courses that can be taught as rapidly or as completely as the teacher/user has available time, in minimally to highly-equipped classrooms.
-Creating an intuitive approach to using CwS.
-Ensuring a child-friendly presentation.
Dozens of schools/community workshops have been held internationally since 2014 to test elements on both platforms and provide essential structured evaluative feedback.
Resources include: teacher’s packs/course, 9 full translations, and CwS integration. Providing translations online increased individual visits from 11k to 20k per month.
The background to the site’s creation is supplied In Making Music with Sounds (2012) investigating the holistic pedagogy, and a 2013 article on the site’s prototype. The supporting evidence also includes a 2015 Polish article, a 2017 book chapter and a 2019 conference paper co-authored with CwS developers.
EARS2/CwS have been endorsed for use in all British, Cypriot, French, Greek and Mexican schools.
