- Despite the widespread claims of and increasingly secular public sphere, in every part of the globe, East and West, tensions continue to erupt between secular ideals and religious ones. The essays collected by Gluhovic and Menon consider specific manifestations of these tensions from around the globe and thus offer a compilation of illuminating case studies of how secular and religious concerns are being presently negotiated in a wide variety of cultural contexts. Performing the Secular: Religion, Representation and Politics was generated in part through the Working Group “Rethinking the Secular: Performance, Religion, and the Public Sphere” at the ASTR in Montreal in 2011, which was co-convened by the editors and which aimed to develop comparative methodological approaches to the analysis of the secular and to consider the ways “the secular” has translated into the theatre and performance studies perspectives. Offering fresh and provocative readings that probe the limits and promise of secularity in relation to questions of performance, politics, and the public sphere, the authors argue that, when it comes to responding to challenges of religious expression within democratic societies, we need to recover a more robust and supple understanding of secularism. Moreover, Performing the Secular makes a case that public cultures must be reimagined and reforged through public performative practices to generate far more capacious, ethical and humane paradigms that imagine and practise new ways of living with religious and cultural difference. Performing the Secular was described as a “ground-breaking anthology […] as well as an excellent example of how to critically reflect on religion, public spheres, art, and culture” (PRS, 2019). Gluhovic co-edited this book with Jisha Menon (Stanford University) and contributes a 9,000 word co-written introduction.
