- The majority of the essays originated in papers given at the interdisciplinary and international conference, The Middle Ages in the Modern World, which was held in 2013, and which the attributed individual co-organized with the co-editor (German Department, Modern Languages). Together, they selected 13 from a total of 131 papers given at the conference for revision, expansion and inclusion in the edited volume (two more were especially commissioned). The whole volume was peer reviewed at the proposal stage and again at final submission by two anonymous reviewers found by OUP/The British Academy; between these stages they also solicited separate, more specialist peer reviewers for each individual chapter, taking responsibility for each other’s reviewer so as to ensure anonymity. The co-editors shared all editorial tasks such as approaching the press, finding peer reviewers for individual chapters and overseeing revisions and copy-editing queries. The attributed individual contributed a chapter of their own work (9,000 words) and co-wrote the introduction with the co-editor (the attributed individual’s share of introduction, c. 6,500 words out of c. 11,300).
