- Funded by European Framework FP7 ["Production of Coatings for New Efficient Clean Coal Power Plant Materials" (POEMA), €3.5M, grant 310436], the project combined 11 industrial and academic partners from across Europe, The Ukraine and Georgia. The research at Sheffield Hallam University was led by Prof. Hovsepian, and developed a nanoscale multilayer coating and HIPIMS technology which enabled ultra-supercritical regime of operation of steam turbines leading to >50% reduction in CO2 emissions. Comparative tests at BAM (Germany) and Inta (Spain) confirmed that SHU’s novel coatings technology led to a significant improvement over with all state of the art coating technologies.
