- This co-edited volume (c.90,000 words) has been a collaborative project based on both an ongoing exchange of ideas and an equitable division of practical labour through all stages of its design, pursuit and completion. The original call for papers for the conference was drafted jointly by the editors, the conceptualisation of the conference and the choice of invited papers was based on shared intellectual input and decision-making. The subsequent edited volume was conceived following substantial conversation between the editors; the introduction (10,900 words) represents a jointly-conceived reflection on the wider field in which the papers sit. The introduction contains approximately 50% of original text by each editor, but all sections were comprehensively worked over by each. Likewise, all papers in the volume were read and provided with comments from both editors, while the preparation of the final manuscript was also shared equitably, down to the level of the index. Neil Gregor also contributed a substantial original research-based essay to the collection (9,200 words), as did co-editor Irvine.
