- This study is on the impact of altruism on various strategic scenarios among multiple decision makers. The main finding is that increased altruism may lead to deterioration of performance. A particularly noteworthy example is the basic, and practically relevant, case of simple traffic networks. This paradoxical effect led to widespread attention and numerous follow-up works (e.g., https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?tp=&arnumber=7823042, https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00224-014-9602-4, https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00453-016-0197-9), and is foundational in establishing a new research line aiming to further investigate the impact of altruism. For example, subsequent works study variations on the model and yield conclusions that provide further evidence for robustness of the observed paradox.
