- This article takes a new political perspective on the distinction between historical and poetic memory. It explores new aesthetic perspectives on violence within contemporary German fiction. It argues that the aesthetic imagination of atrocities can widen our historical knowledge by foregrounding the historicity of violence. This is in sharp contrast to tendencies that celebrate the aestheticization of horror or mythify the eternal recurrence of violence. The article critically discusses sociological and cultural-anthropological narratives which ignore the connection between violentia and potestas while overlooking the state’s monopoly on atrocity.
