- This statement justifies the submission of this edited volume to the REF on the basis of its significance for the field and outlines the contribution of one of its editors (Kirsty Squires). The idea for the book was conceived by Squires due to 1) continued observations that unethical practice in bioarchaeology, archaeology, and forensic anthropology was commonplace; 2) an invitation to deliver lectures focusing on ethical challenges in her research. Squires approached Errickson and subsequently Márquez-Grant for support as this would be her first published monograph. Errickson and Márquez-Grant were responsible for initially contacting several contributors and carried out initial, cursory reviews of some of the individual chapters. Squires, who was made primary editor, was responsible for the overall direction of the book and regularly liaised with authors. In this role, she had a clear idea of the intended overall form of the volume, specifically how it would respond to gaps in current literature - and the project was successfully executed under her direction. She was also responsible for several iterations of extensive edits of individual chapters and the book as a whole. No other editor read the book in its entirety or reviewed multiple drafts of chapters. As a result, the primary editor had extensive input into the final book.
