- The origin of this book was a conference organized by the attributed individual and a co-editor in Heidelberg in 2009, as part of the attributed individual’s Humboldt Fellowship project. Another co-editor joined the editorial team at a later date. Four chapters were later commissioned from colleagues who were not at the conference. With the co-editors, the attributed individual co-authored the introduction “Defining the Field: The Epigraphic Cultures of Late antiquity” (pp. 15-30); the attributed individual wrote the first draft and edited/corrected the final version, being responsible for 40% of the final product. The attributed individual is the author of “Dedicated to Eternity? The Reuse of Statue Bases in Late Antique Italy” (pp. 323-361), the product of research carried out during his fellowship that was also part of the Oxford-based Last Statues of Antiquity project. The attributed individual read drafts of all seventeen chapters in the book and edited seven of them. This involved engagement/criticism of submissions, but not copy-editing. Overall, the attributed individual’s work for the volume, from conception to preparation of the manuscript, constituted 40% of the whole.
