- Written during 2011-2014, the book applies a concept of moral economy developed on an ESRC fellowship in 2003-4 to the analysis and critique of the rise of the rich and super-rich since the 1980s. While most research on inequality in sociology and other disciplines says little about the rich, the sources of their wealth and their justifications, Why We Can’t Afford the Rich interrogates these using a post-disciplinary approach, drawing on a wide range of social, political and economic theory, and secondary data. Written for ‘concerned citizens’ as well as academics, it won the Peter Townsend Prize in 2015.
