- The research is focused on the development of new tools and methods of achieving performer agency in live electronic music and utilising audio-visual symbiosis to enhance audience engagement. This research is undertaken through the design and development of new gestural software instruments and performance works. Three works are presented: The Phonetics Project, Hear to Listen and Transition.
The performance of the works serves to both inform the design of the systems and test the validity of the approaches. The performances are designed to convey a symbiotic relationship between audio and visual gestures in the performance. This serves to enhance performer agency and audience reception. This must be achieved whilst retaining real-time control for the performer and creating audio-visual symbiosis for the audience. This helps enable the audience to see/hear past technology, thereby removing it as a barrier to the reception of the work. Methods are developed for both tactile and non-tactile software hybrid instrument design.
The development of the work has been supported through commissions and residencies. The works and methods have been presented and demonstrated in a wide variety of places and settings, including IRCAM in Paris, BBC Radio Theatre London and BBC MediaCityUK, Manchester, HKB Jazz and Contemporary Music Dept in Switzerland, BEAST FEaST in Birmingham, soundSCAPE Festival in Italy, Atlantec Festival in Ireland, WCF in Connecticut and SBU in New York. Recordings have been played on BBC R3 Late Junction and catalogued with ISCM.
