- Extended paper reporting work that was originally presented as a prestigious postdeadline paper in a major optical communications conference (ECOC'2014). The research was part of the EPSRC-funded Photonic Hyperhighway Programme Grant (EP/I01196X/1) and the EU-FP7 project COSIGN (619572). This was the first ever application of spatial division multiplexing technologies in data-centres and is recognised as one of the most comprehensive experimental works on this topic (see e.g. https://doi.org/10.1364/OL.40.005846). The paper combined cutting-edge fibres and all-optical processing technologies (Southampton) with software-defined networking techniques (Bristol) to offer unprecedented flexibility in setting up data-centre interconnects.
