- This 130,000 word monograph is the outcome of eight years of research. A comparative study of five major English cities, covering over 250 years, it draws on source material from 11 archives across the UK to make a new argument about the historical importance of a vernacular tradition of urban citizenship. In extending the comparative framework from the British Isles to continental Europe, the book required the reading of non-English materials and command of several, distinct historiographies.
