- The output Soutine’s Portraits: Cooks, Waiters and Bellboys is a curatorial project consisting of an exhibition (The Courtauld, London, 19 October 2017 – 21 January 2018) and an accompanying catalogue.
This portfolio has two components:
1) The exhibition catalogue, B. Wright and K. Serres, eds, Soutine’s Portraits: Cooks, Waiters and Bellboys, (The Courtauld/Paul Holberton Publishing, 2017). Wright is the sole author of the lead essay, ‘Soutine’s Misfits’ (7000 words) and co-author of 12 catalogue entries (8,000 words).
2) A dossier illustrating: research activities, installation views and details of other dissemination activities relating to the exhibition.
Wright devised this research project and exhibition, appointed a co-curator and commissioned a further contribution to the publication. Wright established the scope, art historical context and cultural relevance of Chaim Soutine’s significant series of paintings of cooks and service staff, largely from the 1920s. Although long admired as a distinctive part of his oeuvre, these works had been largely neglected in scholarly literature and, until this project, the individual works had never been brought together as the focus of a research-based publication or exhibition.
The selection and display of the works in the exhibition were curated by Wright to demonstrate the central themes of his research, including the fruits of an extended period of detailed examination of individual paintings in collections internationally. The exhibition charted the initial development of Soutine’s interest in these sitters, reassembling groups of works by occupation and by sitter to allow for direct comparison while exploring the central tension between the portrayal of these people as individuals and as types. The exhibition also provided the opportunity to show certain works that had rarely, if ever, been shown in public before.
The exhibition catalogue, included as part of this portfolio, was supported by a competitive grant from the Robert Lehman Foundation.
