- Double-weighted statement
- The book sums up decades of engagement with one of the most central and complex questions of ancient history. As such it represents an extended and complex piece of research, based on comprehensive analysis of a large body of primary sources and critical appraisal of the vast body of secondary literature. The subject is investigated in considerable depth and from different perspectives, including institutional history, ancient narrative and periodisation, modern historiographical models, and discourse analysis. The result is an innovative, multi-layered synthesis of a complex and much-debated historical question.
