- Additional information
- This paper reports research that combines difficult experimental methods to provide unprecedented information about the complex flow field that prevails in the tiny gap between the outer surface (the tip) of a shroudless high pressure turbine blade and the rotor casing. The work includes the application of the mass transfer analogy (in the form of Pressure Sensitive Paints), transient heat transfer measurements using IR thermography and aerodynamic loss measurements. The work led to significant follow on funding from Rolls-Royce totalling GBP170,000. The work was presented at the ASME Gas Turbine EXPO (Oslo 2018).
