- This 145,000 word first book-length treatment of the topic demanded a rich and complex theoretical framework and work in national and international archives. The background research alone took two years’ work. Primary research included thousands of pages of MS sources in six large archives in London, Dublin, Belfast, and Armagh; in-depth study of over 300 lengthy parliamentary papers and 50+ printed primary sources. It covers over 100 years of Irish history. A comparative study of the diaspora features in all chapters (except the first), for which US, Canadian, and Australian primary sources had to be located and studied.
