- We show how magnetic grainboundary optimization leads to improvement of magnets used in electro-motors of project partner Toyota. This paper triggered a Toyota project on Nano-Structured Permanent Magnets Euro £200K. The research did lead to high temperature permanent magnets with a motor efficiency increase of over 20%, reduction of rare earth elements (RE) and the magnets have been employed in an estimated 6.5 m Toyota hybrid vehicles since 2016, reducing RE consumption by 450 tonnes, associated reductions in environmental damage and cost savings of $108 m (see Impact case study).
