- This project establishes a searchable digital catalogue for Welsh instrumental music from the 17th to 21st centuries. Welsh classical music has never benefitted from being the focus of a comprehensive historical treatment, nor has its rich repertoire often been heard on concert stages. By revealing the scale of compositional work hidden in libraries and archives, this database will allow researchers and performers to address the neglect of Welsh instrumental music; the project provides a platform for the rediscovery of forgotten treasures. 140 Welsh composers were identified for thorough investigation, and records of their works probed in Welsh libraries and archives (National Library of Wales, the Welsh Music Archive, Ty Cerdd’s archive, Bangor University Library, Cardiff University Library, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Library). Other sources include the Seventh Catalogue of Contemporary Welsh Music (Guild for the Promotion of Welsh Music, 1981), Welsh music publishers, Archives Hub and the International Music Score Library Project. A range of material has been included in the database: copies of published scores, manuscripts in archives, and manuscripts still in composers’ personal collections. Permalinks and URLs for entries aid location of individual scores. The source spreadsheet uses a format that complements standard Library cataloguing, as well as accounting for fields used on Tŷ Cerdd’s spreadsheet. It is published on a bespoke website by the RWCMD, accessible to the public online through the Library page, and signposted from relevant Welsh music websites. It is envisaged that the same process can, over time, be extended to chamber, vocal, choral and large ensemble music.
A link to the catalogue is provided in the submitted pdf file as well as proof that the catalogue as provided for access has not been modified since the assessment period.
