- This longer-form output of 291pp (7 chapters and 96,000 words) is the culmination of twelve year's research, making extensive use of a range of archives in Britain and Jamaica. It is based on research using hundreds of letters sent and received by Simon Taylor, official correspondence, probate inventories, wills, maps, and contemporary published material, allowing the book to offer a uniquely fine-grained analysis of one planter's life within the wider contexts of Jamaica and the British empire. It relates to several different fields of scholarly inquiry, including the histories of slavery and abolition, Atlantic, British imperial, and Caribbean history.
