- Double-weighted statement
- This book presents the following characteristics which might apply to the research effort associated with a double-weighted output:(i) it is the result of a deep and careful re-elaboration of my doctoral thesis which has resulted in a production of a longer-form output of 416pages; (ii) the research is based on a large body of little-known documentation–including newspaper articles, music scores, recordings and correspondence–located in twelve different archives.

- This book explores the relationship between the Spanish musical avant-garde and the Francoist regime in all its complexity. In this thorough research I demonstrate that, from the late 1950s, the activity of representatives of the Spanish musical avant-garde such as Halffter or de Pablo had a place under Franco’s successive governments. The composers took advantage of this space to promote their careers and some of them even participated in state-sponsored musical events. This pushes back against the commonly accepted view of a heroic musical avant-garde ignored and sometimes attacked by Franco’s dictatorship. More widely, using Spanish musical avant-garde under Franco’s dictatorship as a case in point I show that not all dictatorial regimes have been equally hostile to all forms of artistic avant-garde. This is achieved by means of an extensive research of little-known primary sources, ranging from newspaper articles to music scores, recordings and correspondence. Situated at the crossroads between history and musicology, this book offers a new perspective on the cultural and political history of Francoist Spain and, moreover, contributes to a general reflection on the interpenetration of music and politics, particularly under dictatorial regimes. The book is the result of a deep and careful re-elaboration of my doctoral thesis. The new manuscript has been peer-reviewed prior to its publication. The methodology is both empirical and wide in scope, incorporating tools and concepts from history, political theory and musical analysis. As part of a literature review, particular attention is given to recent studies on music under dictatorships.

- In this book I demonstrate that, from the late 1950s, the activity of representatives of the Spanish musical avant-garde such as Cristóbal Halffter or Luis de Pablo had a place under Franco’s successive governments. The composers took advantage of this space to promote their careers and some of them even participated in state-sponsored musical events. This pushes back against the commonly accepted view of a heroic musical avant-garde attacked by Franco’s dictatorship. Using Franco’s dictatorship as a case study, I show that not all dictatorial regimes have been equally hostile to all forms of artistic avant-garde.
