- This paper corresponds to the public release of a major piece of software that permits rapid modelling and comprehensive simulation of particle accelerators. Our approach is novel because it enables accurate tracking of primary and secondary particles by accounting for interactions in matter. This software is applicable to all particle accelerators and has attracted new users from high energy physics, light sources and medical accelerators. BDSIM allows non-expert users to perform comprehensive simulations and accelerator optimisation in previously impossible timescales. BDSIM is applied in the study of novel collimation, which forms part of the recently awarded STFC/CERN HL-LHC-UK-II grant (£26M).
