- Speech reconstruction for individuals who have undergone laryngectomy has until now been unable to reproduce the natural voice of the speaker. This work describes the technique of Permanent Magnet Articulography (PMA) developed by the authors with NIHR funding. It provides a route to realistic reconstruction of the individual’s voice. Notably this includes female subjects for whom current speech rehabilitation methods are particularly unsatisfactory. Using this work protected under patents GB1416303.4A and US20170263237A1, Practical Control Ltd developed a wearable, prototype PMA device, which retains the speaker’s identity, producing natural expressive speech in real-time (ed.holdsworth@practicalcontrol.com)
