- This volume is part of a four-volume, seven-narrative set of Women’s Travel Writings in India that has its origins in Thompson’s BA SRG-funded research project into the career of Maria Graham (1785-1842). Volume 1 (comprising Maria Graham and Jemima Kindersley’s travel narratives) is 100% Thompson’s own work, including the General Introduction which is written entirely by Thompson. Thompson conceived the 4-vol. India set as a whole; identified the seven narratives for inclusion; and successfully pitched the project to both Chawton House Library and Pickering & Chatto (prior to the latter’s take-over by Taylor & Francis). He then recruited the editors of volumes 2-4, working closely with them in the editorial stages and performing the final edit on all four volumes to ensure consistency in conventions across the whole set.
