- ‘A Machine Aesthetic’ was a national touring exhibition of 11 artists curated by Simón Granell and Eric Butcher. Funded by Arts Council England, the exhibition toured UK during 2014, venues included Gallery North, Newcastle; ProjectSpacePlus, Lincoln; and Transition Gallery, London.
Divided into four parts (Machined Components, Behaving like Machines, Mechanised Processes, Art Machines) the exhibition explored the various manifestations, uses and influences of different aspects of mechanisation within the practice of a diverse range of international contemporary artists
A Machine Aesthetic aimed to explore the complex relationships between painting, film, photography and science, offering new comparisons and analyses of light, the digital structure of the compressed image, and the visual saturation of contemporary life as filtered through the lens and the artist’s hand. Granell’s own contribution included two large paintings and contributed to the ‘Behaving like Machines’ strand.
Through an adaptive approach to curatorial strategies and the diversity of works selected, workshops and artist-led events saw high visitor numbers and very positive feedback, notices and reviews that reflected an empathetic and publicly-accessible experience.
Granell was guest editor of arts and culture magazine Garageland, which featured A Machine Aesthetic at the heart of issue XVI ‘Machines’, January 2014
