- This book is the first monograph in English devoted to the fragmentary remains of an influential early Greek philosopher. It offers a completely new assessment and reconstruction of the evidence, and is the product of seven years of research, including detailed assessment of the manuscripts of Simplicius and engagement with the full range of previous scholarship in English, German, French, Italian and Latin. A primary aim of the book is to extend the range of primary sources for Melissus to include the context of the fifth-century naturalistic exploration of history, geography, and medicine in Herodotus and the medical writers.
