- The c.80-000-word manuscript took seven years to complete. It draws on extensive archival research collecting in total just over 1,000 texts (including policy documents, legislation, speeches by key policy makers). This new dataset, analysed using NVivo software, was complemented with a series of 30 elite interviews with policymakers and industry experts during six months of fieldwork in the United States and China. A second round of interviews was carried out in 2017. These documents and interviews were, where necessary, translated and transcribed by the author employing their proficiency in Mandarin developed over 10 years of study.
