- Double-weighted statement
- This comprehensive historical account acts as a form of reclamation by challenging established histories. It is grounded in a thorough assessment of extensive primary source material including unpublished archival documentation, interviews with filmmakers, and a close reading of published material in the field. It makes important links between institutional frameworks (funding, education), exhibition contexts, the broader visual arts, formal filmmaking, specific American contexts and the important role of women’s filmmaking. The support of two key historians whose history was challenged (and who wrote the Foreword) was important in recognising the complexity and diversity of this important history.
