- This monograph, revised from a doctoral thesis, resulted from four years’ research. It presents a comprehensive survey and in-depth analysis of oriental themes across Hoffmann’s literary and musical output, from his better-known tales to under-researched works including music reviews and unfinished libretti. Its interdisciplinary methodology encompasses literary criticism, philosophy, and musicology. It is the first book to contextualise Hoffmann’s work within Romantic orientalism, but it also reveals how Hoffmann critically reflected on orientalist artistic practices. While the work is broadly historicist, it also draws on postcolonial and feminist theory, suggesting new approaches for reading this canonical author.
