- This peer-reviewed collection in the prestigious Oxford Handbook series was commissioned from the editors by OUP. This extensive publication, some eight years in-the-making, involved the editors in shaping a format which would respond to the literary, historical, philosophical and cultural emphases of the series, guided in part by peer reviewers at the initial stage. The 41 contributions of international scholarship from academics around the world were governed by the sections and remit established by the co-editors and the co-editors took responsibility to ensure that the contributors ‘spoke’ to each other as their research enquiries unfolded. Subsequently, the co-editors composed a critical introduction, showcasing the vibrant critical debates which continue exercise one of the most complex areas of study in English Literature.
