- Aequilibrium is a re-design research project in Italy focusing on the development of new school models. It centres on how to modify building layouts and regulations which allow for the creation of hybrid buildings on the threshold between schools and civic centres. This is combined with a series of pedestrian and cycle micro-urban interventions, allowing children to move independently and connect to different schools, reducing traffic pollution, inequalities and increasing community engagement.
Considering their compulsory use and existing networks how can schools help shape a more balanced world?
In Italy where most schools were built before 1974 with more than half schools unused in Calabria and Sardinia - how to re-invigorate school buildings through a reimagining of building regulations and spaces.
Historical research was conducted with a review of school typologies worldwide, and a revision of Italian building codes alongside design led processes shared with communities. By adopting this dual research approach, the project questions the economic and bureaucratic processes behind Italian school building while simultaneously offering a future solution with reconfigured school layouts and reshaped interior spaces which blur the boundaries between school and civic centre.
Dissemination has emphasized community engagement: three main civic labs were organised with schools to share the research, inviting families: one lab was a theatre play written by the authors and two were story-telling workshops with invited artists.
