- This 282-page book bridges the civil war and social movement literatures, addressing the question why some marginalized ethnic groups turn to violence to express their grievances while others resort to peaceful means. It synthesises five years of research, combining statistical analysis of newly collected data on ethnic group inequality, ethnic groups’ cultural segmentation, and ethnic organizations with painstaking field research in four countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. The book pushes the frontiers of civil conflict research by explaining why some of the world’s most unequal societies have experienced mostly non-violent ethnic group mobilization.
