- Drawing on qualitative, semi-structured interviews (55) at the Gates Foundation and elsewhere, this is the first book-length study of the Foundation's role in global health, development and education. The book is ground-breaking substantively, recognizing the need for more sociological study of individual foundations and their political influence. Theoretically, it develops original points about the social and economic implications of 'philanthrocapitalism', a new, hybrid form of charitable giving that tries to marry private profits with social purpose. It offers new insights about lack of democratic accountability of large private foundations, raising ethical, sociological and political questions not raised in the past.
