- This book is the sum of 7 years of research, the product of Masters dissertation ground-work broadened and deepened in a Doctoral thesis. It is the first county-study monograph of the English Civil War period to achieve a balanced comparative examination of the war effort of both sides. Ways of Royalist organisation in particular were revealed by innovative scrutiny of civic records from garrisoned towns. Novel use was also made of contemporary printed ephemera alongside manuscript material researched from 14 UK and US repositories. Themes addressed reach beyond the book’s county perspective to also inform the wider national military history.
