- A detailed study of an extremely controversial episode in the Spanish Civil War, the book blends techniques from political, social, military and diplomatic history. It analyses the role of the civilian and military fifth columns in betraying the Second Republic, and that of French and British foreign policy. It is based on exhaustive research over four years in the private papers of many protagonists, the archives of the Socialist and Communist Parties, Spanish State and military archives, press and parliamentary debates, and contemporaries’ memoirs, diaries, and letters.
